AISA Karnataka strongly condemns the police assault on KL Puneeth, a Dalit youth from Chikkamagalur!

AISA strongly condemns the custodial assault on a 22-year old Dalit youth from Chikkamagalur by the police sub-inspector of Gonibeedu police station named Arjun. The matter received public attention after KL Puneeth, the victim, wrote to higher officials seeking action against the PSI.

On 10th May, KL Puneeth was picked up on charges of causing trouble between a couple by the Gunibeedu police. He was beaten multiple times both in public and in police custody. The most heinous part of his ordeal being that he was forced to lick urine off the floor in custody by the PSI. He was let off on 10th May itself. Upon Puneeth’s complaint, the PSI has been transferred from the police station but a departmental inquiry is yet to be carried out.

Such instances of atrocities on people from the marginalized sections of our society like minorities, Dalits, Adivasis etc. are nothing new. The time lag between the day the incident happened and the day authorities took cognizance upon public outcry, clearly exposes the kind of impunity enjoyed by the state forces. It can surely be stated that whatever reaches the public eye is just a tiny fraction of all such crimes, most perpetrators remain unpunished.

The RSS-BJP has time and again made it clear that they want the rule of the anti-dalit, anti-women Manusmriti rather the India constitution drafted by Ambedkar that undos the historical injustices and inequalities. The caste system codified and ossified by the Manusmriti serves as the ideological basis of the ‘Hindurashtra’ as propounded by the RSS-BJP where hatred is the norm and violence the rule. Anyone not subscribing to the model of hatred will be isolated, targeted and called anti-nationals. The rise in atrocities against the Dalits and other marginalized sections exemplify the idea of India RSS-BJP wish to establish is that of caste supremacy and hatred.
