The National Board for Wildlife’s Standing Committee discussed a proposal for the use of 98.59 hectares of land from Dehing Phatkai elephant reserve forest for a coal-mining project. It granted approval for mining in 57.20 Hectares of forest land in Saleki Proposed Reserve Forest which has already been broken and being mined by North Eastern Coalfields. The remaining 41.39 Hectares is to be diverted to TikTok Coal Mining Project. But the reality is mining has already started there. This coal mining projects lie just 10 Km away from Dehing Patkai wildlife sanctuary which is a part of Dehing Patkai Elephant Reserve. It has led to very serious concerns among environmental activists and common people in Assam.
The legal large scale coal mining of Dehing Patkai rainforest will bring danger to the rare animals of the rainforest as well as to the Burhi Dehing river basin. The tropical rain forests are the most bio diverse areas on the planet. In the age of global warming and ever frequent rise of deadly viruses, which are originating as effects of neoliberal economy, we cannot afford large scale deforestation of tropical rain forests due to coal mining. The percentage of sulfur is also very high in the coals of Assam and hence this type of coal mining will definitely pollute the rivers flowing through the areas. It will decrease the surrounding soil quality and pollute the Burhi Dehing river basin. Although large scale coal mining of Jaintia hills pollutes the Kopili river but it is much less than the Burhi Dehing because of its less content of sulfur.
This is a planned conspiracy of the central government to exploit the primary natural resources like oil, coal, bauxite, iron, silver and other natural products like timber, MFP( cane, bamboo, brooms) of the North east . The Assam state government does not have proper policies and organization to collect revenues from the mining of major minerals like coal, bauxite, iron etc. So Assam government cannot effectively stop illegal mining in that area. So, the legal and illegal coal mining in large scale still continues in Dehing Patkai reserve forest and no one in the government is taking the responsibility to resist the illegal activity in the reserve forest leading to large scale deforestation and pollution.
We request well wishers to mail the government to stop all legal and illegal mining in Dehing Patkai Rainforest immediately.
